The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new MA programme in Sustainability Science. The MA in Sustainability Science (MASS) programme will be offered in online mode with multiple entry and exit options.
IGNOU New Course 2022-23: Online MA Program’s Goal
The new online MA program’s goal is to give students the chance to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable development and the fundamentals of sustainability science. Graduation in any discipline is a requirement for eligibility to participate in this programme.
During the virtual ceremony of master course, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Nageswar Rao stated that IGNOU is on the right track in sustainable development education and supporting India’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals by making it available online.
IGNOU New Course 2022-23: New Masters programme in Arabic
The university had also recently launched a new Masters programme in Arabic. This new programme has been launched by IGNOU’s School of Foreign Languages. The time duration of this ODL (open distance learning) programme will be two years and it will be taught in Arabic and English.

The online learning management system portal of MASS was launched by Dr. Anil Kumar Rai, Joint Secretary (Parliament and Coordination), Ministry of External Affairs, and the VC of IGNOU in the presence of Dr. Angela Andrade (Chair, IUCN Commission on Ecosystem), Dr. Osamu Saito (Principal Policy Researcher, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, IGES, Japan), Dr Madhav B Karki, Climate Change and Environment Advisor to the Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepal and Dr Shalini Dhyani (Vice-Chair, Asia Region IUCN Commission on Ecosystem and Senior Scientist, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur, India).
IGNOU New Course 2022-23: Online MA Program, Professor Shachi Shah Welcomed
Professor Shachi Shah, director, School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies welcomed the experts in the launching ceremony and highlighted the significance of the programme in her welcome address. Shah reiterated that MASS is IGNOU’s unique initiative for capacity building and knowledge development in India’s commitment to sustainable development goals, mainstreaming sustainable development goals education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and internationalising efforts in the field of sustainability science.
Who can apply for MA Sustainability Science?
Students desiring to apply for MA Sustainability Science must have passed degree in any discipline from a recognized institution located anywhere in India. Duration of the course at the minimum is two years, and the same at maximum is four years.
Fee and age limit and how to apply
The fee to study the course is Rs 7000 per year and there is no upper and lower age limit to apply for the course. The process to apply for the course is online.
- Candidates have to visit the official website of IGNOU at ‘https://ignouiop.samarth.edu.in/’ and register and create an account comprising username and password.
- Post account creation, candidates can login and start filling the application form for Sustainability Science.
- Post filling the form, candidates have to pay the fees and then submit the application.
- After submission, individuals have to wait for confirmation message indicating successful submission.
- Soon after the confirmation message is obtained, individuals can download it and take a printout of it and preserve it for future use
